Gilbert & Sullivan Society

Welcome to the Meltham Parish Church Gilbert & Sullivan Society website.

We are a friendly society which is based in Meltham, West Yorkshire.

We put on two shows a year, one in spring and the main G&S show in November.

We were formed back in 1963 with our first production of HMS Pinafore performed in 1964 and have continued to give a fully staged performance of a G&S opera every November since then.  In addition, a wide range of ‘spring shows’ including music from many different composers has been produced usually in late April.

Initially the group was based on members of Meltham Parish Church choir, but, as they have retired over the years, many new members from outside Meltham have joined to help take the society forward.

Activities

Rehearsals and productions take place in Meltham Church Hall, Greensend Road, Meltham, HD9 5NW.

Rehearsals for the main G&S show start at 7.30pm and run each year from June to the end of August for music rehearsals with floor rehearsals from September to November also starting at 7.30pm.

Prospective new members (both on and off-stage) are very welcome to visit us on a rehearsal night.

Social Events

Our Social Secretary, Trudy, arranges our social events calendar over the year.  This can take the form of a quiz night, or a bingo night and both of these have been very successful in the past.  Restaurant meals are usually booked on the Sunday following the end of both our Spring Show and our main show in November.  There is also a between-show meal which is held between the Saturday matinee and the last performance on Saturday night.  All are invited!

Spring Show 2019: ‘Come and Hear the People Sing’

This year’s spring show differs from our usual format in that there is no Gilbert & Sullivan content!  We are performing various numbers from a variety of well-known shows, some older and some relatively new.  The two dates are Friday 12 and Saturday 13 April, commencing at 7.30pm with a supper included in the price of the ticket which is £10 per person.

Main Show 2019: ‘Iolanthe’

Our main production this year will be Iolanthe and is due to take place Tuesday 19 to Saturday 23 November, evening performances commence at 7.30pm with a matinee on Saturday at 2.15pm (as well as an evening performance).  Details regarding tickets will be posted when these are known.

We would love to hear from you if you wish to join us as a singer, backstage, refreshments or to help in any way – please see our Contact Us page.
